Users who use the search bar are 2x more likely to convert. Is your site's search functionality holding them back?
On any e-commerce site, users fall into two categories: Browsers and Searchers. Browsers click through categories hoping to find inspiration. Searchers know exactly what they want. Data shows that users who interact with the search bar are highly motivated and convert at significantly higher rates.
If your search bar is broken, slow, or hidden, you are actively turning away your most profitable users.
1. Make the Search Bar Massive
Don’t hide your search function behind a tiny magnifying glass icon in the top right corner. The search bar should be a massive, prominent text input field directly in the center of your navigation header.
2. Predictive Autocomplete (Rich Suggestions)
When a user types “Bl”, the search bar should not just suggest text. It should drop down a visual menu showing thumbnail images, prices, and titles for “Black Boots,” “Blue Shirts,” etc. This allows the user to bypass the search results page entirely and jump straight to the Product Detail Page.
3. Typo Tolerance and NLP
If a user searches for “Addidas” instead of “Adidas,” your default Shopify or Magento search engine might return “0 Results Found.” This is a catastrophic failure. Integrate an advanced search engine (like Algolia or Typesense) that utilizes Natural Language Processing (NLP) to understand synonyms, plurals, and typos.
4. The “No Results” Page is a Dead End
If a user searches for a product you genuinely do not carry, never show them a blank page. A “No Results” page should immediately offer alternative pathways: “We couldn’t find X, but here are our top-selling items in that category,” or provide a clear link to contact customer support. Keep them in the funnel.
