The biggest enemy of Conversion Rate Optimization is the CEO's personal preference. Learn how to build a culture of data-driven design.
In many agencies and startups, design decisions are made by the HIPPO (Highest Paid Person’s Opinion). The CEO likes the color purple, so the buttons are purple. The CMO thinks sliders look modern, so the homepage gets a massive slider.
This is gut-driven design, and it destroys conversion rates. True CRO requires checking your ego at the door and letting the data dictate the UI.
1. Sliders are Conversion Killers
Almost every executive loves homepage carousels (sliders). They look flashy. But the data is brutal: Studies show that only 1% of users click on a homepage slider, and 89% of those clicks are on the very first slide. Furthermore, sliders destroy your Core Web Vitals and push valuable content below the fold. The Data-Driven Fix: Replace the slider with a single, highly optimized static Hero image and a clear Call to Action.
2. Stop Hiding the Navigation (The Hamburger Menu)
Designers love the “hamburger menu” (the three little lines) because it makes the header look clean and minimalist. On mobile, it is necessary. On desktop, hiding your core navigation behind a click reduces discoverability and hurts conversions. The Data-Driven Fix: Expose your top 4-5 product categories directly in the desktop header. Let users see what you sell without forcing them to click.
3. The Myth of the “Fold”
For years, marketers believed that users never scroll, so everything must be crammed “above the fold.” Heatmaps prove this false. Users are completely accustomed to scrolling (thanks to Instagram and TikTok). The Data-Driven Fix: Don’t cram the hero section. Use the area above the fold to capture attention and communicate the value proposition, and let the user naturally scroll down to read the persuasive details.
Build a Testing Culture
Never say, “I think this will convert better.” Say, “My hypothesis is that this will convert better, let’s run an A/B test.” By letting the users vote with their wallets, you remove internal politics and guarantee that every design change directly increases revenue.
