1. Ending Tests Too Early
Just because Variant B is winning after 48 hours does not mean it’s the true winner. You must wait for statistical significance (usually 95%+) and ensure the test runs for at least one to two full business cycles (14-28 days) to account for weekend vs. weekday traffic variations.
2. Testing Too Many Variables
If you change the headline, the button color, the product image, and the layout all at once, and conversions go up by 15%, which change caused the lift? You’ll never know. Isolate your variables to understand exact causal relationships.
3. Ignoring Statistical Power
Statistical significance tells you if a result is real; statistical power tells you if your sample size is large enough to detect a difference in the first place. Low-traffic sites often run tests that are underpowered, leading to “flat” results that hide real behavioral shifts.
4. Focusing on Micro-Conversions
Optimizing for “Add to Cart” clicks instead of actual “Completed Purchases” is a dangerous game. A deceptive headline might get more people to click a button, but if they feel tricked, they will abandon the cart. Always track the final revenue impact.
5. The “Novelty Effect”
Sometimes, returning users click a new button simply because it’s new and stands out from what they are used to. Over time, this novelty wears off, and the conversion rate drops back to the baseline. Running the test long enough helps filter out this effect.
